Summary of the PhD project :
Nonlinear fiber optics studies have been limited to uniform fibers until now, i.e. fibers in which longitudinal parameters are constant. Recently, we have developed a unique technique allowing to fabricate new generation optical fibers termed topographic fibers. With this technological development, we are able to control very precisely the longitudinal evolution of nonlinear and dispersion parameters, which adds a new degree of freedom and open the way to an unexploited field of investigations. Our first studies were focused on the spontaneous modulation instability process, which is one of the most universal phenomenon in nonlinear dynamics, in a fiber with a periodically modulated dispersion. In parallel, we have developed an experimental setup allowing to map the amplitude and phase evolution of all waves involved in the mixing process. This setup has been validated with a uniform fiber and results have been published in the prestigious revue Nature Photonics (Highly cited paper selon l’ISI, i.e. top 1% of papers in the field), in addition with 5 invitations in international conferences in less than one year.

The present project is the direct continuation of those studies. We propose to investigate the stimulated modulation instability process in a saturation regime, which is a manifestation of the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam recurrence. The aim will be to study theoretically and experimentally the evolution of the amplitude and phase of the waves involved in the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam recurrence in a dispersion oscillating fiber. This project will be both theoretical and experimental, depending on the candidate’s skills and wish. This is an international collaboration with Stefano Trillo (h-47) and Nail Akhmediev (h-50 ) both leading expert in nonlinear theory.
